CAP Release Group
ELAINE ALLISON (Update - April 2016)
As a nurse, midwife, school nurse and health visitor I have worked for many years with families who have been affected by addiction, at times I have been able to be very open and share my faith, but mostly the opportunity has not been there. The possibility of helping people using a course that is rooted in my faith as a Christian to me is very exciting.
As I have payed into a pension for many years, I was able to semi retire in May last year, freeing me up to be more available for whatever God had in mind. For a couple of years Kevin and I have been part of the team who visit Addiwell Prison to help lead Sunday worship twice a month, Thomas, who is very active with CAP (Christians Against Poverty) became part of the team in August. He told us of plans to start a CAP money course in Addiwell offering it to prisoners in the lead up to their release. I offered to help.
Through many 'God-incidences' I was trained. While on the money course training I heard of CAP release. CAP realises that there are many causes of debt and poverty and CAP release seeks to help people with dependency issues and behaviours. It empowers the Church to help people deal with, and break free from life controlling habits such as smoking, gambling, drinking or internet addictions. It's basis is an 8 week course where people can come together to support one another emotionally and practically in an atmosphere of trust, openness, honesty, accountability and confidentiality. I really connected with the need for this and I felt I could offer my experience.
There are many promises in the Bible that I feel relate to this challenging subject: Jesus says in Luke 4:18 'The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at Liberty those who are oppressed'
Galatians 5:1 says 'For it is for freedom Christ has set us free stand firm, then, do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yolk of slavery' we are to have no other master than Jesus'.
John 8:36 'When the son sets you free you shall be free indeed'!
In this ministry, I can relate and identify with the disciples in their first mission: Matthew 10:8b-10 'you received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or 2 tunics or sandals or a staff, for the labourers deserves food' I am totally reliant on Jesus guidance, instruction and direction. Romans 8:26 states that 'the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses'. Recently Alan Stirling talked about the disciples 'ordinariness' during a Sunday service; I am one of those ordinary people. I can do nothing without Christs authority to do what He has called me to!
I would highly recommend the 8 week course to anyone, within or out with the Church, who is aware that they have a personal battle with a life controlling habit. I will post information regarding details of the course soon but if you would like more information about the course or to offer help please contact me on 07729312773 or firstname.lastname@example.org
